Oshima Tsumugi, designated as a traditional craft of Japan, is considered one of the most admired and prestigious kimono textiles. This playful yet refined piece was created by Maki Silk Weaving (Amami Oshima), known for its mastery of mud dyeing and natural indigo dyeing. Material Using fine raw silk threads, the fabric is woven at high density. From thread preparation to dye application, every step is carried out through specialized craftsmanship, involving numerous processes before the fabric is completed. Because of this meticulous work, the threads themselves are extremely durable, making this a kimono that can be passed down from mother to child and even to future generations. Enjoy the clean, comfortable feel and the distinctive rustling sound unique to Oshima Tsumugi. Design Oshima Tsumugi expresses patterns using tiny dots called kasuri. Although it is a woven textile, the designs appear as if they were painted through dyeing. These intricate patterns are entirely the result of hand craftsmanship. Each kasuri dot, often less than 1 mm in size, is carefully aligned by skilled weavers, and every bolt of fabric is handwoven from start to finish. The pattern depicts waves through kasuri dots of varying sizes, symbolizing waves that continue endlessly and carrying a wish for peace in the future. It is a kasuri-patterned kimono textile produced in the northernmost region of Japan, and is designated as a traditional craft of Japan. Silk yarn that had been stored away with no destination, kept simply because it felt too precious to discard, was gathered together, randomly arranged, and dyed using the kasuri technique before being woven into fabric. The result is a special textile where colorful threads gently appear within a soft gray base. The patterns are woven with pre-dyed yarn, giving a sense of handcrafted warmth, while the natural luster of silk adds elegance. This one-of-a-kind kimono comes with unlined (hitoe) tailoring, allowing it to be worn for three seasons other than midsummer, depending on how it is styled with inner or outer layers. This special piece was created in collaboration with Okujun (World Yuki), a long-established textile wholesaler with more than 110 years of history in the Yuki production region. Design The design is inspired by “angel’s ladders,” the rays of sunlight that shine through gaps in the clouds. In folklore, when these rays appear it is said to be a sign that angels are descending, bringing happiness. This motif expresses the wish that the wearer will enjoy a joyful day. Diamond-shaped kikko kasuri forms a delicate necklace-like pattern, while the rays of light breaking through the clouds are represented with three different types of kasuri. The color is dyed in Dusk Blue, inspired by the hues of twilight. Material For the warp threads, mawata-powered drawn yarn (with raw silk intertwined) is used, while the weft uses mawata-powered drawn yarn. By adding the strength of raw silk to the warp, the fabric achieves a durable yet refined texture. Yuki Tsumugi is known for the gentle, rustic texture created by the natural slubs of mawata silk. As the kimono is worn over time, the soft fuzz of the silk gradually smooths out and the natural luster of silk becomes more pronounced. The fabric also becomes softer and more supple, making it increasingly comfortable to wear.
