As successors for this step in Japan become fewer, Japanese artisans are passing on the technique overseas to ensure the tradition of Arimatsu-Narumi shibori continues. Each stripe is uniquely tied using one of three methods: hitome shibori, yotsumaki shibori, or nui shibori. In some shibori processes, the tying (“kikuri”) is done in Cambodia. As successors for this step in Japan are becoming scarce, Japanese artisans teach the technique overseas to preserve the Arimatsu-Narumi shibori tradition.
