While Kurume kasuri is typically used for autumn and winter cotton kimonos, we achieved a “Kurume kasuri yukata” by weaving with extra-fine threads of the same thickness as those usually used for yukata. The aurora-like gradient is created using six colors for the warp threads, a rare design in Kurume kasuri where solid-colored threads are standard. Across the 13-meter length of fabric, no two sections are identical—making each piece uniquely special. We named it “aurora” to capture the feeling of your own magical moment. Though the fabric is lightweight, it is not as sheer as typical summer kimonos. You can wear it as a yukata in midsummer or layer it with outerwear and innerwear for year-round use. For longer-lasting wear, we recommend adding an oshiki-ate (fabric reinforcement) for +2,200 JPY; please consult us if desired. By using the yarns in a random arrangement, each kimono becomes a truly one-of-a-kind piece. In contrast to the colorful leftover yarns, the base colors are carefully chosen for easy coordination. The randomly placed yarn stands out beautifully, creating a piece that appears simple at first glance yet is full of thoughtful detail. For the first time, linen yarn has been incorporated, giving the fabric a light and crisp texture. In addition to the natural uneven texture of Kata-gai cotton, the fabric reveals a subtle translucency when held up to the light. By weaving linen yarn into cotton Kurume kasuri, a new type of summer kimono has been created. It features traditional kasuri patterns typical of Kurume kasuri, and expresses patchwork, rooted in the history of monpe workwear, through the weaving itself. Since the fabric is not sheer, it can be worn as a summer kimono or yukata in midsummer, and also throughout the year depending on how you style it with outerwear or inner layers. Its light and airy feel also makes it suitable for layering with items such as dresses or pants. The color “forte indigo” uses indigo-dyed yarn characteristic of Kurume kasuri. Although color fixing has been applied, please take care to avoid color transfer caused by friction, sweat, or moisture during wear.
